Ricky Gill, National Security Assistant to President Donald Trump, reconfirmed the United States government’s dedication to ongoing economic support for Nepal during a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba. This discussion took place at the Raisina Dialogue held in New Delhi, where various facets of Nepal-US relations were explored. Dr. Rana emphasized the need for US intervention concerning the release of Nepali student Bipin, who was abducted by Hamas militants in October 2023, stressing Nepal’s urgent diplomatic efforts to secure his safe release.
Additionally, Dr. Rana engaged in conversations with Indian Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Nepal-India relations, including discussions on trade, transit, and hydropower development. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal (MoFA) stated that both countries intend to fortify their ties for mutual benefits. Dr. Rana also addressed issues concerning Nepal-Ukraine relations with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, notably advocating for the release of seven Nepali nationals caught in conflict, while clarifying that Nepal prohibits citizens from joining foreign militaries under any circumstance.
In her dialogue with Minister Sybiha, Dr. Rana further sought Ukraine’s endorsement for Nepal’s candidacy to the United Nations Human Rights Council. An agreement was also formalized to permit visa-free access for official passport holders from both nations. Furthermore, discussions with Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi involved bilateral relations and collaborative efforts to combat climate change. Dr. Rana discussed Nepal’s impending graduation from the LDC category in 2026, highlighting the importance of international support in this transition. The meeting also centered on Nepal’s candidacy for the UN Security Council and Popsoi’s forthcoming visit to Nepal, which both parties anticipate will strengthen their bilateral relations.
