Renergen, a natural gas and helium producer based in South Africa, has commenced commercial sales of liquid helium. The company successfully achieved cooling levels of -269˚C on March 13, enabling them to produce liquid helium for sale the following day. Their operations are centered around the Virginia Gas Project located in the Free State Province.
To facilitate the production of liquid helium, Renergen has utilized natural gas sourced from their Virginia Gas Project. The project has substantial financial implications, with estimates projecting revenue between R5.7 billion ($313.7 million) and R6.2 billion ($341.2 million) once both Phase 1 and Phase 2 reach full production capacity.
Phase 1 of the project focuses on producing 350 kilograms of liquid helium daily alongside 2,700 gigajoules of liquefied natural gas (LNG). In contrast, Phase 2 is projected to elevate production to 4,200 kilograms of liquid helium per day, along with an anticipated output of approximately 34,400 gigajoules of LNG.
