Six months after Hurricane Helene’s landfall, Southern Baptists remain committed to supporting survivors in their recovery efforts. Since the hurricane struck Florida on September 26, the focus has shifted from immediate relief to long-term rebuilding efforts. Helene resulted in 248 fatalities and caused approximately $78.7 billion in damages, ranking it as the seventh-costliest storm in U.S. history.
Josh Benton, Vice President for National Ministry at Send Relief, emphasized the extensive reach of the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief (SBDR) network, stating, “What set Helene apart was the widespread impact of the storm.” In the aftermath, SBDR prepared over one million meals and undertook more than 7,800 recovery jobs across several states, leading to 244 professions of faith.
As efforts transition from recovery to rebuilding, initiatives like the Arise and Build program have emerged. Led by Maria Lee, wife of Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, this initiative has successfully completed over 110 jobs. Todd Unzicker, Executive Director-Treasurer for N.C. Baptists, noted how local churches mobilized to aid their communities, describing it as them living out their mission through action.
Initially, SBDR’s response addressed immediate needs by providing meals and support for cleaning up after the storm. Moving forward, volunteers will assist in rebuilding homes, focusing on properties that can be quickly repaired first. According to associational mission strategist Richard Weeks, the landscape and impact of Helene has presented unique challenges unlike prior disasters.
Approximately 1,400 disaster response teams, composed of over 7,000 volunteers, are working diligently to aid homeowners, with approximately 130 homes completed and 250 under reconstruction. Unzicker has witnessed how these efforts have revitalized faith within communities, noting the outpouring of help and spiritual transformation.
The devastation in western North Carolina was significant, with many residents left uncertain where to turn. Weeks shared that church involvement instilled a renewed hope in some individuals who had previously distanced themselves from faith. Inspiring stories emerged, such as a woman initially skeptical of volunteers being drawn back to church through their kindness.
Baptists on Mission received a substantial $3 million grant from the North Carolina government to aid rebuilding efforts. Additionally, Send Relief provided financial backing, while contributions continue to be accepted via ServeNC to support ongoing volunteer efforts through 2025. Unzicker remarked, “God has made His grace and providence evident and answered our prayers.”
