Germany Accuses Iran of Instigating Violence in Syria’s Coastal Region

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has accused Iran of instigating violence in Syria’s coastal region, linking Iranian-backed forces to recent unrest. She urged the Syrian government to take action against extremist groups while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported significant civilian casualties. Iran has denied involvement in the unrest.

On March 20, 2025, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock publicly criticized Iran for exacerbating the recent violence in Syria’s coastal area. She indicated that elements supported by Tehran are believed to be connected with remnants of President Bashar al-Assad’s forces engaged in the turmoil.

During a press conference following a meeting with Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, Baerbock stated, “Iran is one of the key actors violating Syrian sovereignty and is involved in the recent events on the coast.” She urged the Syrian government to take decisive actions against extremist factions and ensure accountability for crimes committed.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on March 12 that over 1,383 civilians, mostly from the Alawite community, have been killed amid the latest surge of violence in the coastal region. In response, Iran condemned the attacks on Alawites and refuted any allegations of its involvement in the ongoing unrest.

In conclusion, Germany is holding Iran accountable for its role in the violence plaguing Syria’s coastal region. The calls for action from Germany highlight the need for accountability and a resolution to the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The tragic loss of civilian lives underscores the urgency of addressing these issues within the region.
