On March 21, 2023, the Jeay Sindh Freedom Movement (JSFM) condemned the enforced disappearance of Taiib Laghari, a devoted member of their movement, who was allegedly abducted by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) on January 26. His ongoing absence has caused distress among his family and widespread outrage among Sindhi nationalists, emphasizing the gravity of his situation.
In its press statement, JSFM claimed that Laghari’s abduction exemplifies a systematic repression of Sindhi activists by the Pakistani government. They stated, “Pakistan continues to forcibly disappear Sindhi activists, journalists, and human rights defenders, using fear and repression to silence those who demand justice and self-determination.”
Furthermore, JSFM highlighted the environmental and economic plight facing Sindh, alleging that the Pakistani government is illegally constructing six canals on the Indus River. This construction reportedly diverts essential water resources to Punjab, severely impacting the agricultural and daily needs of millions of Sindhi citizens. They asserted, “This is a direct threat to Sindh’s existence.”
Previously, on March 15, 2025, protests organized by the World Sindhi Congress took place outside the Pakistan Embassy in London to raise awareness of human rights violations and environmental degradation, drawing significant international attention. Sohail Abro, the Chairman of JSFM, participated in the demonstration, calling for justice for the victims of enforced disappearances as he stated the need to halt the canal constructions.
JSFM is appealing to international organizations, including the United Nations and Human Rights Watch, for immediate action concerning Pakistan’s alleged human rights abuses. They declared, “Sindh is under attack–its people are being abducted, and its water is being stolen. The world cannot remain silent while Pakistan continues its crimes against the Sindhi nation.”
