Tensions Rise as Cameroon Assistant Coach Absent During Match Against Eswatini

Joachim Mununga, assistant coach of Cameroon, did not attend the match against Eswatini due to disagreements with FECAFOOT. Mununga emphasized his dedication to Coach Marc Brys and the national team, while Brys expressed frustration regarding his absence. Mununga remains unsigned, despite government salaries covering the coaching staff’s expenses, leading to calls for his re-inclusion in the technical area.

The absence of Joachim Mununga, assistant coach for the Cameroon national team, was notable during the recent match against Eswatini, where the Indomitable Lions failed to secure a victory, resulting in a draw. Allegations suggest that Mununga had entered into a disagreement with the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) concerning his role in the technical area.

Despite previously denying any discord with FECAFOOT, Mununga’s exclusion during the match raises questions about the relationship between the assistant coach and the federation. He expressed his commitment to serve both Head Coach Marc Brys and the national team, stating, “I have known (head coach Marc) Brys for a long time. He also trained me but I am here to challenge him. My ambition is to serve Cameroon, the coach and the players.”

Head Coach Brys expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation, emphasizing his reliance on a competent assistant, stating, “I cannot work with people I do not know and who are less competent. I need my assistant. (…) It is my right. I am the head coach, and I decide who should be on the bench, just like in other countries.”

Currently, Mununga does not possess a formal contract with the Cameroon national team. Although the Cameroonian government covers the monthly salaries of the technical staff, Mununga has not yet signed an official agreement. The rift between Mununga and FECAFOOT prompted the Minister of Youth and Sports to advocate for Mununga’s reinstatement in the technical area before the Eswatini match.

The absence of Joachim Mununga during the draw against Eswatini highlights tensions between him and the Cameroonian Football Federation. Mununga’s commitment to the national team contrasts with the evident discord, causing concern for Head Coach Marc Brys, who desires a competent assistant. The lack of a formal contract for Mununga further complicates the situation amidst calls for unity from the Minister of Youth and Sports.
