The Ugandan Parliament has approved the deployment of the UPDF to South Sudan in response to civil unrest. The Ugandan Parliament has officially approved the deployment of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to South Sudan. This motion was presented by Hon. Jacob Oboth, the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, during a parliamentary session led by Speaker Anita Among on March 20, 2025. The deployment follows a request from South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir due to civil unrest in the Upper Nile State since early March.
Hon. Oboth elaborated on the situation, stating that on March 10, 2025, President Kiir requested military assistance from President Yoweri Museveni to prevent a potential security crisis, as outlined in their defence cooperation agreement. In response, President Museveni authorized the UPDF to conduct a peace enforcement mission as part of Uganda’s constitutional and legal duties.
The Minister emphasized that this military cooperation embodies Uganda’s principles of patriotism and regional solidarity. He noted, “It was done in a spirit of brotherhood, solidarity and shared historical and regional ties between the two countries.” Oboth further explained that the security instability in South Sudan poses significant threats to Uganda’s security landscape economically, socially, and politically.
Additionally, Honorable Gilbert Olanya supported the motion, urging lawmakers to back the deployment. He remarked on the importance of peace for Northern Uganda and the business community in South Sudan, stating, “Anyone who comes from Acholi and West Nile would highly support the deployment of the UPDF in South Sudan.” Olanya pointed out that the UPDF deployment would ensure stability not only in South Sudan but also in Uganda.
The approval of the UPDF’s deployment to South Sudan represents a crucial step in addressing security concerns in the region.
