This meeting, reported by the Saudi Press Agency, was hosted by Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and included Lebanon’s Michel Menassa and Syria’s Murhaf Abu Qasra.
The discussions culminated in an agreement to establish border demarcation and to form specialized committees aimed at enhancing coordination between Lebanese and Syrian forces. Additionally, the two sides committed to addressing security challenges along their border and will reconvene in Saudi Arabia for further talks.
The Saudi Press Agency emphasized, “The kingdom affirms its full support for everything that achieves the security and stability of the two brotherly countries and contributes to maintaining security and stability in the region.” The original meeting intended to take place in Syria was postponed due to anticipated security appointments by Damascus, as reported by Lebanese security sources.
Recent escalations along the Lebanese-Syrian border have resulted in casualties, including the deaths of eight Syrian soldiers and a Lebanese boy during skirmishes. Although a ceasefire has been established, unresolved underlying issues could reignite conflict, according to Western diplomatic sources. The historical relationship between Lebanon and Syria has been rocky, and the recent clashes have hindered efforts to improve ties after the fall of former president Bashar Al Assad.
Incidents along the border have also involved clashes between Syrian forces and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. Syrian authorities have pledged to combat Hezbollah-linked smuggling operations in a bid to secure the border against illicit activities.
