Strengthening Bilateral Relations: The Impact of the Strategic Framework Agreement between Iraq and the USA

Mudhar Mohammed Salih, Iraq’s PM Advisor, highlighted that the Strategic Framework Agreement with the U.S. is crucial for financial integration and balanced foreign policy, contributing to Iraq’s security and economic stability. The continued improvement of relations will support sustainable development while respecting Iraq’s sovereignty.

On Saturday, Mudhar Mohammed Salih, the Prime Minister’s Advisor for Financial Affairs, emphasized the significance of the Strategic Framework Agreement (SFA) between Iraq and the United States, noting that it has fostered financial and banking integration within Iraq. This agreement has played a crucial role in establishing a balanced foreign policy and economic relations between the two nations.

Salih remarked to the Iraqi News Agency (INA) that the SFA, signed in 2008, laid the groundwork for stability in bilateral relations. It has facilitated essential cooperation in various domains, enhancing Iraq’s partnership with the United States, a critical global player.

He stated that the United States’ involvement in the international coalition against ISIS has been vital for maintaining Iraqi sovereignty, security, and stability. This cooperation has opened doors for international trade and investment in Iraq, fostering an environment conducive to economic prosperity.

Moreover, Salih explained that the SFA has created a favorable atmosphere for Iraq’s financial and banking relations, aiding its integration into the global financial system. This integration is marked by enhanced transparency and governance in collaboration with international markets and financial communities.

He highlighted Iraq’s strategic position as OPEC’s second-largest crude oil producer and the significance of its security for global energy stability. Since overcoming ISIS, Iraq has pursued an independent foreign policy, striving for stable economic conditions in a complex global landscape.

Salih noted that the two-decade-long relationship with the United States has yielded two major benefits: achieving a balanced foreign policy and fostering peace by reducing regional tensions through cooperation with major powers. Iraq is now recognized as an important player in the region, promoting stability.

The Prime Minister’s Advisor concluded that the ongoing enhancement of relations between Iraq and the United States will contribute to sustainable development, ensuring that this partnership respects Iraq’s sovereignty and independence in decision-making, built on mutual respect and shared commitments to peace and development.

The Strategic Framework Agreement between Iraq and the United States is foundational for enhancing bilateral relations, providing economic and security benefits to Iraq. It emphasizes financial integration, balanced foreign policy, and regional stability. Continued improvement in this collaboration is essential for Iraq’s sustainable development, sovereignty, and peace-building efforts.
