The 49th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is scheduled to be held in Jamaica in July 2025. This significant gathering aims to address various pressing issues, particularly trade and security matters, as highlighted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith.
Minister Johnson Smith announced that on July 1, Prime Minister Dr. the Most Hon. Andrew Holness will assume the Chairmanship of CARICOM. She emphasized that the Prime Minister, who leads the Prime Ministerial Subcommittee on External Trade Negotiations, had already introduced key topics during the 48th Regular Meeting in Barbados earlier this year.
The Minister noted that robust discussions are planned to facilitate a more enriching dialogue on the prevalent challenges, specifically security constraints that hinder economic growth across the Caribbean. Prime Minister Holness has advocated for a comprehensive, global response to transnational crime to enhance regional cooperation.
Additionally, the timing of the CARICOM meeting has been adjusted to occur one week later than usual, coinciding with the International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, Spain, from June 30 to July 3. This change will enable Heads of Government, who also act as Finance Ministers, to participate in the Seville conference.
