RSF Shelling in North Darfur: A Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds

Shelling by the RSF in El Fasher, North Darfur, resulted in nine deaths and 17 injuries. Simultaneous attacks occurred in El Obeid, North Kordofan. The SAF responded effectively, repelling assaults and destroying RSF vehicles. Ongoing conflict has caused significant displacement and destruction in the region.

On Sunday, shelling by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher, North Darfur, resulted in at least nine civilian fatalities and 17 injuries, as reported by the Sudanese Armed Forces’ Sixth Infantry Division (SAF). Additionally, during the Eid El Fitr celebrations, the RSF attacked El Obeid in North Kordofan, causing the death of a child and injuring eight others.

In response to these assaults, the Sudanese Air Force successfully repelled an RSF ground attack in El Fasher, destroying four military vehicles and inflicting casualties among RSF forces. Subsequent airstrikes targeted an RSF supply convoy, leading to the destruction of 12 combat vehicles and compelling the paramilitary group to retreat.

Tragically, five displaced individuals sustained serious injuries from SAF bombings at the Shangil Tobaya camp in North Darfur on Saturday night. The General Coordination of Camps for Displaced Persons and Refugees accused the SAF of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and residential areas, while attempts to contact the SAF for comments went unanswered.

Moreover, the SAF had previously targeted a weekly market in the Tora area of North Darfur, resulting in numerous casualties, with estimates indicating that the death toll may reach into the hundreds. In light of the ongoing conflict, Maj Gen Ahmed Elkhader Saleh, commander of the Sixth Infantry Division, expressed determination to lift the RSF siege of El Fasher, stating that “victory was looming on the horizon.” The city has faced persistent conflict since May of the previous year, marked by RSF efforts to capture the last government-controlled area in Darfur. The ongoing fighting has devastated the local infrastructure, displacing a majority of the city’s population and severely affecting essential services such as hospitals and water sources.

The recent shelling by the RSF in North Darfur highlights the severe humanitarian crisis impacting civilians amidst escalating violence. The Sudanese Air Force’s response indicates ongoing military conflicts while increasing civilian displacement raises urgent concerns about the safety and welfare of those affected. Continued reports of targeted assaults on civilian areas underscore the complexities and human costs of the situation, requiring immediate attention from international authorities.
