Nirmala Sitharaman Returns Early from US Visit Following Pahalgam Terror Attack

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has shortened her trip to the US and Peru in light of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. She aims to return to India to support her people during this tragic time. The attack has prompted widespread outrage and condemnation from political and public leaders.

In response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, has opted to abbreviate her official tour to the United States and Peru. The Ministry of Finance confirmed her decision, stating she would take the earliest flight available to return to India during this tragic period.

Sitharaman’s initial five-day visit to the United States commenced on April 20. She was welcomed at the San Francisco International Airport by several dignitaries, including India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, and Finance Secretary, Ajay Seth. Her itinerary included crucial meetings associated with the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Washington, DC.

Despite her scheduled participation in significant discussions regarding global finance and potential bilateral meetings with various officials, the attack in Pahalgam necessitated her immediate return. Following her engagements in the United States, she was set to visit Peru from April 26 to 30, but this plan was altered due to the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Sitharaman publicly condemned the Pahalgam attack on social media, extended her condolences to the bereaved families, and emphasized the government’s firm stance against terrorism. She stated, “Heart breaking news from Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. No words to express grief. I condemn the terrorist act… Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger.”

In the aftermath of the attack, Union Home Minister Amit Shah promptly convened a high-level security meeting to address the situation. The Indian Army and local police have initiated a search operation in the vicinity of Pahalgam to apprehend those responsible. The attack drew widespread condemnation among political leaders as well as public protests across Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting the community’s outrage against such acts of violence.

Nirmala Sitharaman’s decision to truncate her international visit highlights the gravity of the situation following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Her immediate return illustrates a commitment to address domestic concerns during challenging times. The collective national response, inclusive of strong condemnations and public demonstrations, underscores the call for justice and the persistent fight against terrorism in the region.
