Dr. Lorraine Ramirez Villarin, an assistant professor specializing in Middle Grades, Secondary, and Science Education at the University of North Georgia (UNG), has recently returned from South America, where she participated in the prestigious Fulbright-Hays Program, supported by the U.S. Department of Education. During her time abroad, she collaborated with 15 fellow faculty members from various higher education institutions to explore Colombia’s innovative approaches to addressing climate change and sustainability initiatives.

In her reflections on the experience, Dr. Ramirez Villarin remarked on Colombia’s status as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Now back in the United States, she has a commitment to disseminate her newly acquired knowledge. As a demonstration of her engagement, she guest lectured at the State University of New York (SUNY) Oneonta, where she shared her insights on climate change and facilitated student discussions about its causes.

Motivated by the experiences of her colleagues, Dr. Ramirez Villarin pursued the Fulbright-Hays fellowship, particularly drawn to its focus on climate change and sustainability, areas closely aligned with her academic background in environmental biology. “I thought this would be perfect,” she noted, highlighting her desire to gather knowledge to enhance her curriculum and teaching methods.

Currently, she is developing a climate change instructional resource aimed at elementary students, intending to simplify complex topics to promote understanding and proactive engagement. This initiative complements a collaborative grant from the National Science Foundation, which has enabled the creation of a climate change scaffold for middle and high school curricula. However, Dr. Ramirez Villarin seeks to produce additional materials tailored specifically for younger audiences.

Her upcoming project, a storybook-style instructional guide, will incorporate artistic illustrations by a UNG graduate, depicting effective climate change measures being implemented in Colombia and how these practices can be adopted globally. The resource will also feature a Spanish edition to reach a broader audience.

Recognizing that climate change can generate diverse opinions, Dr. Ramirez Villarin stated, “What Colombians are doing is something that I feel should be shared with the world.” She is scheduled to present her findings at three forthcoming conferences, including the Georgia Science Teachers Association conference and the National Science Teaching Association Conference in Philadelphia.
