The war catches us here among the host families, now we have nowhere to go.” The UN notes that key routes around Goma are obstructed, and the city’s airport is inoperable.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for Rwanda to withdraw its forces and for the M23 to halt their advance. He urged both parties to cease hostilities. This appeal comes on the heels of violent clashes that resulted in the deaths of thirteen peacekeeping soldiers. Nations like the UK and France have echoed these demands for conflict resolution and troop withdrawal.
Rwanda has not disputed the allegations of backing the M23 group but contends that the DRC is to blame for the violence. At a recent Security Council meeting, Rwanda’s representative lamented that the international community condemned the M23 while neglecting the actions of the Congolese army. Following increasing tensions, the UN has decided to withdraw non-essential staff from Goma while maintaining essential operations.
