According to the Ministry of External Affairs, a total of 10,152 Indian nationals, comprising both undertrials and convicted prisoners, are currently incarcerated across 86 countries. The highest concentration is found in Saudi Arabia with 2,633 detainees, followed by the United Arab Emirates with 2,518, and Qatar with 611. This data highlights the considerable presence of Indian citizens in prison within the Gulf region.
The information was revealed in response to a parliamentary inquiry by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh. The Ministry reports that Indian missions actively consult with local authorities to safeguard the welfare of detained citizens. The Indian government provides essential support, including legal assistance and family communication, and it engages in negotiations for prisoner transfers and amnesty when possible.
The report emphasizes the Indian government’s ongoing commitment to protecting the rights of its citizens abroad.
