Gachagua: GEMA to Shape Kenya’s Political Landscape in 2027

Rigathi Gachagua has proclaimed that the GEMA communities will be influential in establishing Kenya’s next government, regardless of Raila Odinga’s involvement. He asserts that their unity will be crucial for victory in the upcoming elections, while expressing skepticism about President Ruto’s political standing. Gachagua’s outreach to opposition leaders signifies a strategic maneuver in the evolving political arena as the 2027 elections approach.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has asserted that the Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, and Akamba (GEMA) communities will play a pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s next government, independent of opposition leader Raila Odinga’s support. Speaking during a church service in Machakos, he expressed his confidence in GEMA’s influence over the country’s political landscape and remarked, “GEMA ndiyo dawa ya Kenya. GEMA itaunda the next government.”

Gachagua emphasized that GEMA’s political unity would be instrumental in achieving electoral success, indicating strong voter numbers for the anticipated 2027 elections. He stated, “We have looked at the numbers and they are good, with or without him (Raila).” The former deputy president also criticized President William Ruto’s reliance on Odinga’s influence for his political survival, arguing that if Ruto were to alienate Odinga, his chances of re-election would diminish significantly.

In a predictive statement regarding the upcoming elections, Gachagua stated, “Ruto atakuwa number three ama number four 2027.” He maintained that, should GEMA unite, they possess the potential to lead the nation for the next century, saying, “If we unite as GEMA, we shall be in power for the next 100 years.” His comments align with ongoing speculation concerning his political aspirations and his recent efforts towards collaboration with opposition figures.

Just prior to these statements, Gachagua hinted at a willingness to cooperate with Odinga for the purpose of ousting President Ruto, in light of a recent political arrangement that included several of Odinga’s allies joining the government. Gachagua criticized this as a betrayal of opposition principles while articulating his uncertainty about Odinga’s intentions regarding his political alliances.

In an interview with local radio stations, Gachagua responded to inquiries about potential collaboration with Odinga, highlighting his skepticism about the opposition leader’s direction. He articulated doubts regarding Ruto’s future voter support, especially from the younger demographic. “Ruto is not getting a vote from the 9 million Kenyan Gen Zs, so whether Raila is with him or not, we will defeat him,” Gachagua affirmed, asserting a strong demand for political change among Kenyans.

In pursuit of a robust opposition coalition, Gachagua has engaged with significant political figures, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party, indicating a substantial shift in the political landscape as the 2027 elections draw nearer.

Gachagua’s statements reflect a firm belief in the political strength of the GEMA communities, with a clear intention to leverage their unity for future electoral success. His criticism of Ruto and openness to alliances with opposition figures underline his strategic approach in shaping Kenya’s political future, while his emphasis on the significance of Gen Z voters indicates a keen awareness of changing political dynamics. As Kenya approaches the next elections, Gachagua’s actions will likely contribute to a shifting political landscape, marked by new alliances and the potential for significant change.
