The DOGE has reported over $80 million in spending by the DoD on DEI and climate change studies, which has been criticized as wasteful. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell outlined specific examples and assured further disclosures would follow as part of efforts to improve operational efficiency.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has disclosed that the Department of Defense (DoD) allocated over $80 million towards diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell provided examples of this spending, which he criticized as wasteful, including substantial amounts directed at various universities for studies on climate change and DEI training efforts.
Specific expenditures cited by Parnell include $1.6 million dedicated to the University of Florida for climate change research in West Africa, $1.9 million for DEI transformation training in the Air Force, $6 million to the University of Montana for initiatives aimed at bridging societal divides, and $3.5 million from the Defense Human Resources Activity supporting DEI organizations.
Further investigation by Campus Reform revealed an additional $5 million spent on related initiatives, which were sourced from USAspending.gov. Notable examples are $1.6 million to Boise State University for research on climate change’s impact on bird migration and egg-laying, $967,357 to Columbia University regarding climate-driven migration, and funding for additional studies regarding climate change’s effect on national security and refugee perceptions.
Parnell emphasized that such expenditures are misaligned with the military’s core functions, stating, “This stuff is not a core function of our military. This is not what we do. This is a distraction from our core mission.” He assured that more findings would be disclosed soon as efforts to enhance organizational efficiency continue, stating, “We are working hand-in-glove with DOGE. So, stay tuned in the weeks ahead as we trim the fat, preserve the muscle, [and] make the DOD more mission-capable and more lethal.”
The Department of Government Efficiency revealed that the Department of Defense has expended over $85 million on initiatives related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and climate change. This expenditure has been criticized as wasteful by Pentagon officials, indicating a possible misalignment with military objectives. Parnell has promised further revelations regarding inefficient spending, aligning with ongoing efforts to enhance the efficacy and mission capability of the DoD.
