The IMF has requested Lebanon to adopt a unified financial reform program to enhance economic recovery. During a meeting with President Aoun, the IMF outlined its vision for addressing Lebanon’s financial crisis. Hezbollah’s Secretary General has also expressed unwavering strong defense against Israel while promoting national stability.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called on Lebanon to implement a unified financial reform program to accelerate economic recovery and restore investor confidence. Ernesto Ramirez Rigo, the head of the IMF mission to Lebanon, presented this vision during a meeting with President Joseph Aoun at Baabda Palace in Beirut. Rigo emphasized that a coordinated strategy developed in partnership with Lebanese institutions and the IMF is essential for the country’s recovery.
President Aoun expressed gratitude to the IMF for its support and confirmed Lebanon’s commitment to pursuing essential reforms, categorizing them as a national priority rather than merely an international obligation. In April 2022, the IMF had reached a staff-level agreement with Lebanon for a $3 billion financing program spanning 46 months, contingent upon the implementation of specified reform measures.
Additionally, Hezbollah’s Secretary General, Naim Qassem, stated that the group will not allow any Israeli presence in southern Lebanon, highlighting Hezbollah’s ongoing strength and dedication to national defense. In a televised discussion, Qassem affirmed that Hezbollah remains prepared for military engagement, despite having ceased operations during a ceasefire agreement.
On domestic governance, Qassem reiterated Hezbollah’s commitment to stabilizing the nation and supported the authority of security forces over internal security matters. Nevertheless, he insisted that maintaining Hezbollah’s arms is vital to addressing the threat posed by Israel. Qassem stated, “Israel poses an existential threat, and resistance is Lebanon’s right.”
In summary, the IMF’s call for a reform program in Lebanon aims to foster economic recovery and rebuild investor confidence. The need for a coordinated approach involving Lebanese institutions is highlighted, alongside Lebanon’s commitment to necessary reforms. Concurrently, Hezbollah’s leadership emphasizes national defense and security authority, reflecting the complex domestic and international factors influencing Lebanon’s current situation.
