Second National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana Advocates for Stronger Catholic Identity in Schools

The Second National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana concluded with a strong emphasis on enhancing Catholic identity within educational institutions. Held from March 10 to 15 at the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua, the forum focused on the theme, “Catholic Education for Integral Development: Shaping a Resilient and Inclusive Ghana.” The President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference stated that effective education requires a collaborative approach with clearly defined roles.

Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi of the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani presented a series of recommendations. He urged collaboration with key organizations such as the Christian Council of Ghana and the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council. He advocated for a review of the draft Memorandum of Understanding concerning the management of Mission/Unit schools and its signing by the Government for application in the next academic year, 2025/2026.

Furthermore, Bishop Gyamfi proposed the establishment of a committee by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference to craft a five-year strategic plan for Catholic Education by the end of July 2025. He emphasized the importance of strengthening Catholic identity in schools by promoting Catholic teachings, building chapels, increasing clergy presence, and appointing chaplains to support the institutions effectively.
