Both men received 20-year prison sentences for offenses related to state security. Talon expressed his dismay over the incident, describing it as a personal tragedy, stating, “I experienced the Olivier Boko episode like a drama and personal tragedy.”
Moreover, Talon indicated that he would be vigilant in choosing a successor who would continue his reforms. He remarked, “The next president of Benin will be my president, from my country, my family, my community and everything that is dear to me.” He also addressed the deteriorating relations with neighboring countries Niger and Burkina Faso, citing the lack of security cooperation.
In discussing regional security challenges, Talon pointed to the threats posed by terrorist groups operating from these nations, whose military governments have ceased cooperation with Western nations. He criticized the government responses, noting, “We contact them regularly. We don’t get a response.” Furthermore, he rejected allegations regarding foreign military presence in Benin, asserting, “There is obviously nothing like this on Beninese soil.”
