The World Council of Churches (WCC), in partnership with the United Nations, the Organization of American States, and the Roman Catholic Church, plays a permanent role in the peace dialogue between the Colombian government and the FARC-EP’s Estado Mayor de los Bloques. Recently, Jenny Neme Neiva has been appointed as the WCC’s deputy special envoy for this initiative, succeeding in representing the WCC and engaging in peace dialogue meetings.
Neme Neiva, affiliated with the Christian Mennonite Church of Colombia, is well-regarded among stakeholders for her significant experience and expertise in Colombia’s peacebuilding efforts. In her new role, she will focus on leading discussions and activities pertinent to the ongoing peace process, significantly contributing to its advancement.
Dr. Humberto Shikiya, after serving as the WCC’s special envoy for two years, will transition into a senior advisor role, providing continued support alongside Neiva. He emphasized, “Jenny’s experience in peace and reconciliation work as a woman of faith… will contribute in a distinctive way to the peace process.”
Dr. Fernando Enns will now hold the title of special envoy, ensuring that the WCC’s commitment to peace in Colombia is integrated into its decision-making processes. Although he will not be based in Colombia, Enns plans to visit regularly to lend strategic guidance to the peace efforts.
Following a humanitarian crisis in the Catatumbo region, the WCC is reinforcing its mission. Peter Prove, the director of the WCC Commission of the Churches on International Affairs, stated, “Through this reconfigured and expanded representation… the WCC reaffirms its steadfast commitment to supporting a just and sustainable peace in Colombia.”
Upcoming meetings scheduled in Colombia from March 17-21 will include collaborations with government officials, UN representatives, and members of the Inter-ecclesial Dialogue for Peace (DiPaz), along with participants from the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission.
