Stephen Acquah, a footballer, has recently appeared in an Accra Circuit Court facing charges of robbery and escaping lawful custody. It is alleged that he robbed a salesperson of her bag, cash, and personal effects in Sakumono at approximately 4:30 AM. Acquah has pleaded not guilty, and the prosecution plans to amend the charges to include causing harm.
The presiding judge, Mr. Jojo Amoah Hagan, granted bail to Acquah amounting to GH¢100,000, which requires two sureties, one of which must be justified by movable or landed property. The case is scheduled for a hearing on March 27, 2025.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Kingsley Oppong presented the prosecution’s case, stating that the complainant, Christina Benyiwa Baidoo, who resides at NTHC Estate in Sakumono, was approached by Acquah at Vivian Farms shortly after leaving her home for an appointment.
The prosecution detailed that Acquah demanded the complainant’s handbag, which contained various personal items and GH¢160. When she refused, a struggle ensued, during which Acquah allegedly inflicted wounds on her hand with a knife. Following this altercation, Acquah allegedly fled, but was apprehended by the Sakumono Police Patrol Team after Baidoo raised an alarm.
Baidoo sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Sakumono Hospital for treatment, later being referred to the Tema General Hospital for stitches and further care. The medical report indicated that her injuries were significant, measuring 6×3 centimeters deep.
In a subsequent incident at the police charge office, Acquah allegedly escaped while in handcuffs but was quickly recaptured. The prosecution also noted that he admitted to the offense in his caution statement during police interrogation.
