AUSSOM honored Ugandan police officers for their efforts in promoting peace in Somalia. The commendation ceremony recognized their resilience and contributions to restoring law and order, with officials applauding their teamwork and dedication in various operational contexts.
The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) recently recognized the commendable contributions of Ugandan police officers toward fostering peace in Somalia. The acknowledgment took place at the AUSSOM Force Headquarters in Mogadishu, where Police Commissioner AIGP Hillary Sao Kanu and other senior officials honored those who completed their tour of duty.
In his address, Mr. Bam remarked, “This medal parade is a testament to your resilience, dedication, and sacrifices in the fight against Al-Shabaab and the broader peace-building mission under the African Union mission.” He praised the officers for their unwavering determination during challenging conditions, which significantly restored law and order, thus enhancing the confidence of the Somali populace.
The UFPU-12 contingent has been actively deployed in Somalia since April 2024 as part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). This unit has rendered significant operational support to the Somali Police Force, profoundly impacting the success of the mission. AIGP Kanu emphasized their resilience and dedication, stating, “The journey of UFPU-12 in Somalia has been of resilience, discipline, and dedication to duty.”
SSP Justus Asiimwe, the UFPU-12 Contingent Commander, commended the strong cooperation between Ugandan officers and the Nigerian Formed Police Unit in Mogadishu. He expressed appreciation for the bonds developed through shared experiences, noting, “We will always cherish the experiences and relationships that we have developed and cultivated.”
AUSSOM employs Formed Police Units (FPUs) to provide crucial operational support to the Somali Police Force. This includes VIP protection, security at events, mentorship, and securing government facilities. Other nations, such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone, also contribute FPUs to the AUSSOM mission.
In conclusion, the recognition of Ugandan police officers by AUSSOM underscores their vital role in enhancing peace and security in Somalia. Their dedication and bravery in the face of adversity have not only contributed to the African Union’s mission but also fostered a stronger connection with the Somali people. The collaborative efforts among various formed police units highlight international commitment to stability in the region.
